Functional Rhinoplasty in Toronto

Functional rhinoplasty is performed to improve nasal airflow when obstruction results from the framework of the nose. A deviated septum, valve narrowing, weak sidewall, trauma or previous surgery may contribute.

What this procedure may address

  • Persistent obstruction on one or both sides
  • Symptoms during exercise or sleep
  • Visible nasal deviation
  • Sidewall collapse during inspiration
  • Breathing difficulty after previous surgery
  • Structural changes following injury

What patients need to understand

Septoplasty and functional rhinoplasty are not interchangeable. Septoplasty treats the internal septum; functional rhinoplasty may rebuild the valves, sidewalls or external framework. Some patients require one operation and others require a combination.

Assessment and planning

Assessment includes symptom history, internal examination, septal position, valve support, sidewall movement, external deviation and possible inflammatory causes. Surgery is recommended only when the suspected cause is structural and the proposed correction is proportionate.

Recovery

Temporary congestion can initially make breathing feel worse. Internal or external splints may be used. The full functional effect should not be judged in the first days or weeks because swelling changes airflow during healing.

Individual postoperative instructions take priority over general timelines published online.

The proposed benefits must be weighed against risks that include:
