What patients need to understand
Explant surgery and capsulectomy are not synonymous. The capsule may be left, partially removed or completely removed depending on diagnosis, risk and surgical feasibility.
Assessment and planning
Assessment includes implant type and age, symptoms, imaging, capsule findings, tissue quality and whether the patient wants a lift, replacement or no additional reshaping.
Recovery
Recovery depends on whether removal is isolated or combined with capsulectomy or lift. The breast may look deflated, lax or asymmetric after removal; final contraction takes time.

Risks and limitations
The proposed benefits must be weighed against risks that include:
